Delete your Upken account
Upken, by Mohamad Almasri
Last updated 27 October 2026.
The short version
- Fastest: delete your account in the app: Profile > Settings > Account > Delete account. It takes a few seconds.
- No longer have the app? Email [email protected] from the email address on your account, and we will delete it for you.
- Deleting your account does not cancel Upken Pro. Cancel it in the App Store or Google Play first (section 6).
- We delete your account and data straight away. Copies in our server logs disappear automatically within 7 days and copies in our backups within 14 days, and crash reports and sign-in email records within 30 days, except emails you sent us (kept 24 months) and the few other records listed in section 5.
1. Delete your account in the app
- Open Upken and tap Profile in the bottom bar, then Settings.
- Tap Account, then Delete account.
- Upken shows you what will be deleted and what is not. It reminds you that deleting your account does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription, with a Manage subscription button.
- On an iPhone, if you use Sign in with Apple, we ask you to confirm with Apple once more, so we can disconnect Upken from your Apple Account. You can skip this step.
- Type DELETE, then tap Delete account. It takes a few seconds, and you need an internet connection.
This works for guest accounts too.
2. Ask us by email
If you can't use the app (for example you have deleted it), you can ask us to delete your account:
- Email [email protected] with the subject "Delete my Upken account".
- Send it from the email address on your Upken account:
- if you sign in with an email code, that address;
- if you sign in with Google, your Google email address;
- if you sign in with Apple and chose Hide My Email, your account uses an Apple relay address. Write from the email address your Apple Account uses, and tell us the relay address for Upken. You can find it on an iPhone in Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Sign in with Apple > Upken. We then confirm the request through that relay address (step 3).
- To make sure nobody else deletes your account, we may ask you to confirm, for example by replying to an email we send to the address on your account. We never ask for a password (Upken has none).
- We delete your account within one month of your confirmation (the time the law gives us), and email you when it is done.
3. Guest accounts
A guest account has no email address, so we cannot find it from an email. Please delete it in the app (section 1).
If you have already deleted the app, your guest account is deleted automatically 30 days after you last used it. If it has Upken Pro, it is kept until 30 days after Pro ends.
4. What we delete
Everything we hold about your account:
- Your sign-in: your email address and your links to Apple or Google. If you confirmed with Apple (section 1, step 4), Upken is disconnected from Sign in with Apple. If you skipped that step, or Apple could not be reached, you can remove Upken yourself on an iPhone in Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Sign in with Apple.
- Your profile: username, avatar, date of birth and age group, your goal, the topics you chose or hid, your settings and your time zone history.
- Your reading: reading history, reading receipts, the ideas you unlocked with the free daily allowance, the early-access books you started, daily sets and Today settings, recaps and their timing, your streak, Ken points and rank.
- Your library: saved ideas, collections, likes and Read Later.
- Pro: our record of your Pro status, the purchase event records that name you, and your customer record at RevenueCat, our subscription provider.
- Invitations: your invitation code (Upken has no invitations at launch, so nobody has used it).
- On your phone: you are signed out, and the app clears what it stored for you: offline books and downloads, changes waiting to be sent, your recent searches, your Aura card choices and pictures, and the set-up progress. Scheduled reminders are cancelled. Three things stay on the phone, because they belong to the phone rather than to you: its display and reading preferences (theme, text size), the under-16 answer if one was given, and the device check key (section 5).
- Subscription notice records: the records that we reminded you before a payment.
- Usage statistics: they are not linked to your account, so we cannot yet promise to delete them with it. They stay with PostHog, under a random code for your install, until PostHog deletes them after 1 year (section 5).
5. What we keep afterwards
| Where | What | For how long |
|---|---|---|
| Our database backups | Our own daily copies of the database, kept on the founder's computer in the UK and not used in normal running | Up to 14 days |
| Our server logs | Technical records, such as your IP address and user ID | Up to 7 days |
| Our deletion record | Only the random ID of the deleted account and which steps finished, so that restoring a backup cannot bring the account back | Up to 15 days while Upken is in testing, then 8 days |
| Our abuse counter | How many times deletion was tried in an hour, under that random ID | 8 days |
| The device check | On our server: a scrambled code for your phone and how many free ideas were opened on it that day. It is not linked to any account, so it is not deleted with yours. On your phone: the key the code is made from (iPhone; Android uses the Android ID), so that a new guest on the same phone does not get new free ideas | Server: 3 days. Phone: until you uninstall the app (on iPhone the key may outlast that) |
| Crash reports (Sentry) | Technical reports, which have no Upken user ID | Up to 30 days |
| Usage statistics (PostHog) | Statistics under your phone's random install codes, not linked to your account | Until PostHog deletes them after 1 year (its free plan) |
| Update checks (Expo) | The app version and a random code for this install, from each update check | Under Expo's own retention rules (privacy notice, section 2.8) |
| Sign-in code emails (Resend) | Records of the code emails we sent you | Up to 30 days |
| Apple and Google | Their own records of your purchases and account | Under their own policies |
| Emails you sent us | Your messages and our replies | 24 months after the last message, unless you ask us to delete them sooner. Rights complaints and reports of unlawful content are kept for 6 years. |
Images and links you already shared with other people cannot be called back.
6. Your Upken Pro subscription
Deleting your account does not cancel Upken Pro. Apple or Google keep charging until you cancel with them:
- iPhone: Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions > Upken > Cancel Subscription, or apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions.
- Android: Google Play > your profile picture > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > Upken > Cancel, or play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions.
A new Upken account does not get a new free trial: the stores allow one trial per store account.
7. Deleting only some data
To delete some of your data without deleting your account, email [email protected] and tell us what. To stop usage statistics, switch off Settings > Privacy > Usage statistics. Library > History > Clear empties your History list, but keeps your progress, streak and points; to delete your reading history itself, email us.
8. Deletion is permanent
We cannot undo a deletion. Your saves, history, streak, Ken points and rank are gone for good. You can always start again with a new account.
9. Questions
Email [email protected]. Our privacy notice (upken.app/privacy) explains how we use your data and your rights.
